IIHS Crash Tests – Small Overlap Crashes

For the past few months, I have been following the developments and results related to small overlap crash testing.  The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) began
testing the small overlap crash in 2012.  The small overlap is roughly 25% of the front of the vehicle versus the normal 50% overlap crash.  The findings have been pretty interesting, especially from the potential patient and rescue challenges.

I found this video awhile back and decided to share it as it demonstrates the testing and some of the results related to small cars in these types of collisions. Pay particular attention to damage, potential patient injury patterns, and think about how you would respond to a collision such as these.

Rescuers may wish to follow the work of the IIHS (www.iihs.org) since much of what they do directly relates to what we will or will not have to do when it comes to automobile crashes now and in the future.

Keep it safe!
